I am not an early bird, but I managed to drag myself out of bed for the torch relay in Redcar on Monday 18th June, and I am glad I did.
I set off on foot at 06.40 from my house for the coast road to see the flame and was surprised by how many people were heading in the same direction. I couldn’t believe the turnout so early in the morning.
Redcar Olympic Torch – The police join in the fun
I arrived only just in time to see the first parts of the police convoy. The atmosphere was very good, with people chatting away trying to weigh up what was happening, was the flame here yet, could you see, what would happen next?
Redcar Olympic Torch – Low fives all round
I have to admit I forgot my flag and appropriate dress (red, white and blue of course) but a lot had not. There was even an enterprising family making bacon and sausage butties in their garden along the route, although I wasn’t able to establish whether these were for sale or invited family and friends.
Redcar Olympic Torch – More low fives!
When we did catch a glimpse of the flame in the distance, we couldn’t help but notice the torch bearer was running in circles rather than a straight line, enabling crowds on both sides of the road a good look! I later found out that Sharon Gayter is an endurance runner!

The look of joy on her face basically said it all!
Waving to the crowds
If you get the opportunity to see the olympic flame relay, or to join in any of the related events in your area, please do. Everyone I have spoken to has enjoyed it, some in spite of themselves!
A Very Happy Torch Bearer
Have a great weekend all, lets just home the wet weather isn’t too much of a dampener on things.
