Well this February has a double whammy for us ladies, a Valentine and an opportunity to pop the question…

Why we Celebrate Valentines Day?
Well, apparently the day was originally to honour an early Christian martyr named Saint Valentine.
This became associated with romantic love later, in the times of Chaucer in the middle ages.
Hand writted cards were popular in the 18th and 19th century, and have since given way to mass produced cards, of the likes of hallmark and moonpig.com.
For more info you can of course refer to Wikipedia Valentine’s Day.
Valentines, Best and worse
What is the best Valentine’s gift you have ever received? Or worst? It would be great to hear from you.
My best was from Dad when I was at school… a curiously heart shaped potato with the following verse pinned to its chest
“I love your hair
I love your lips
Please dont turn me
into Chips”
What could compete with that? I only wish I had a photo!
I was married to a true Yorkshireman, so I imagine I did get a meal out for the first Valentine we had together, but after that it went a bit downhill. The ‘deal’ was that we would wait a week for restaurant prices/ business to die down. Ditto the flowers and chocolates. Ah, the romance.
Having said that, I was lucky enough to receive spontaneous gifts through the year of flowers, chocolates (and once bizzarely a Maplin Catalogue) so not all bad!
Hope you ladies all get fabulous cards and pressies this year! Maybe some of you will even get a proposal…
Leap Year Bonus
If he doesn’t come through for you this Valentine’s Day, tradition states that you can take the initiative and propose to him on Leap Day, 29th February this year!
According to Wiki (so probably not true, but good fun), in Finland if he refuses your proposal on Leap Day, he has to buy you the fabric of a skirt. Or in Denmark 12 pairs of gloves. Not quite sure when you would need 12 pairs of gloves…but then I did find 7 pairs in my camera bag last week!

Funny.
Just realised the worst must be my family member who took his brand-new girlfriend to Luton for Valentine’s weekend, to see HIS team play football!
It’s not about the size of the present more the size of feeling and thought behind it. I remember someone leaving me the last rolo in my locker in school this sticks in my mind as he must have bribed the school caretaker into opening it with his key and also into secrecy from my interogation on who it had been.I think anonymous valentines are the most romantic especially if you never get to find out who it was…something utterly daydream worthy. ( Yes I am a sad romantic )
Oh bless you Louise, you really are a romantic. What a lovely gesture, the last rolo. Not sure where I stand on the annonymous Valentines, don’t think I am in favour of them (too confusing!)
Even thought I’ll be alone on Valentine’s day, I’m happy cause I love love and I’m happy for people who are in love! (:
hehe great ! I love this article
